Sevani mechanical alarm clocks were manufactured by the Yerevan Clock Factory (YCF) in Soviet Armenia, starting as a distinct brand trademark during a major factory reorganization in the mid-1970s.

Manufacturing History & Origins

• Foundation: The Yerevan Clock Factory was established in 1943 during World War II, making it the first watch and clock manufacturing plant in the USSR located outside of Russia proper.

• Evolution of Production: Early operations focused on assembling imported parts before scaling to produce millions of mechanical timepieces exported to roughly 60 countries worldwide.

• The Sevani Trademark: In 1961, a sister plant called the Yerevan Factory of Fine Watches (YFFW) was founded. By the mid-1970s, both facilities were reorganized to streamline output: YCF officially adopted the Sevani brand name specifically for its functional mechanical alarm clocks, while YFFW transitioned to the trademark Nairi for luxury musical table clocks and gold wristwatches.

• Design and Materials: Early Sevani models featured minimalist, late-modernist industrial styles—often round designs encased in metal rings—before shifting into varied plastic and bakelite housings (such as cream, white, or yellow rectangular and molded cases) with bold Arabic numerals by the 1970s and 1980s. Some later movements included 4-jewel mechanical configurations.

• End of Soviet Production: Manufacturing of these Soviet-era clocks continued until the dissolution of the USSR around 1991. Today, Sevani clocks are less common on the international market than mass-produced Soviet contemporaries like Slava or Yantar, making them sought-after pieces for horological collectors.

Good vintage condition with age-related wear, including light scratches, surface marks, and some small speckling to the blue finish, as shown in the photographs. The metal back also shows light wear consistent with age. Untested for timekeeping but fully working makes a lovely mechanical ticking noise alarm works etc
