Vintage CWS Biscuits Bird & Floral Hinged Tin c.1940s Persian Style

A wonderfully decorative vintage biscuit tin produced for the Co-operative Wholesale Society, with C.W.S. Biscuits impressed into the underside.

Believed to date from around the late 1930s to 1940s, the rectangular tin features an elaborate Persian-inspired design of colourful exotic birds, flowers and scrolling gilt decoration set against a rich blue ground. The pattern continues around the sides, giving the tin the appearance of an old painted lacquer box.

Made from lithographed tinplate, it has a hinged lid, rolled edges and four small raised feet. The interior retains its original plain metal finish.

This is a particularly attractive example of British biscuit-tin design and would look lovely displayed with a collection of vintage tins, kitchenalia or advertising memorabilia. It could also be reused for storing letters, photographs, sewing accessories, keepsakes or other small treasures.

Condition

In well-used vintage condition with considerable age-related wear. There is rubbing and loss to the printed decoration, scratches, surface marks, tarnishing and areas of oxidation, particularly around the edges, corners and lower panels. The underside and interior also show scratches, spotting and general wear.

The hinged lid remains attached and opens and closes as expected. Despite the wear, the birds, flowers and colours remain clearly visible, and the aged surface gives the tin plenty of authentic character.
