Vintage H. J. Dukes Eucalyptus Oil Chemist’s Bottle – St Neots

A wonderfully evocative vintage chemist’s bottle, retaining its original aged paper label for Eucalyptus Oil (B.P.) and its removable ground-glass stopper.

The label identifies H. J. Dukes, Dispensing Chemist, Market Square, St Neots, and includes period instructions suggesting eucalyptus oil for influenza, colds and hay fever. The timeworn typography, amber-brown paper and traditional glass stopper give it plenty of authentic old-pharmacy character.

H. J. Dukes was an established local dispensing chemist in St Neots. Historical records held by the Cambridgeshire Community Archive Network include advertisements for Dukes Chemist in Market Square during the 1930s and again in a St Mary’s parish magazine of March 1957. St Neots Museum also holds a surviving rose-water bottle bearing the H. J. Dukes name.

Judging by the bottle style, ground stopper, printed label and surviving local advertising, this example likely dates from approximately the 1930s to 1950s.

The clear glass bottle has a cylindrical body, rounded shoulders and a substantial ground neck. It is complete with its original-style glass stopper, an increasingly important feature for collectors. The pharmacy label remains largely readable, although naturally faded, darkened and worn from age.

A fascinating piece of St Neots social history and a characterful display item for collectors of antique pharmacy bottles, medical advertising, chemist memorabilia or local history.

Condition: Good original vintage condition. The paper label has age-related fading, staining, creasing and edge wear.
