Huntley & Palmers was a major British biscuit manufacturer founded in Reading in 1822 by Joseph Huntley, who opened a small bakery selling biscuits to stagecoach travelers. The business grew when George Palmer joined as a partner in 1841, leading to the construction of a large factory and global expansion. By 1900, it was the world's largest biscuit maker, but biscuit production in Reading ceased in 1976.

Early Years & Partnership

1822:

Joseph Huntley, a Quaker schoolmaster, establishes a small bakery in London Street, Reading, selling biscuits to travelers.

1829:

Joseph's son, Thomas, joins the business, which becomes known as Joseph Huntley & Son. Joseph Huntley & Son.

1841:

George Palmer, a distant cousin and fellow Quaker, becomes Thomas Huntley's partner.

1846:

The company opens a large new factory on Kings Road, built in a former silk works.

Growth & Global Expansion

1857:

George Palmer and his brothers buy out the Huntley family's interest but retain the company name.

1865:

Joseph Leete becomes the company's continental representative, facilitating international expansion.

1867:

Huntley & Palmers receives Royal Warrants from the King of Belgium and Napoleon III of France, boosting its prestige. 1900:

The company is the world's largest biscuit manufacturer, employing over 5,000 people and operating globally.

Decline & Legacy

1976: Biscuit production at the Reading factory ends.

Legacy: The firm played a pivotal role in Reading's development, earning it the nickname "Biscuit Town". The Huntley & Palmers Collection at Reading Museum preserves its history.

Tunbridge ware is a decorative inlaid woodenware that originated in the 17th century around the spa town of Tunbridge Wells. Initially, it consisted of simple turned wood items and white-wood with printed decoration. By the mid-18th century, the craft evolved to a complex marquetry technique using thin pieces of coloured woods to form mosaic patterns and pictorial designs, becoming a popular tourist souvenir industry.
