Lot of 16 Vintage British Sixpences, 1950s–1960s with 1966 French ½ Franc Coin

A lovely small collection of vintage coins, comprising 16 British sixpences dating from 1952 to 1968, together with one French ½ Franc coin.

The British sixpence, often affectionately known as a “tanner,” was worth six old pence, or half a shilling, and was part of Britain’s pre-decimal currency system. The sixpence has a long history, first introduced in the reign of Edward VI in 1551, and remained one of Britain’s most familiar everyday coins for centuries.

This group includes examples from the reigns of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth II, making it a pleasing little run of mid-20th-century British coinage. The George VI 1952 sixpence is the standout coin in the group, as 1952 examples are notably more collectable than many of the later common Queen Elizabeth II dates. Catalogued 1949–1952 George VI sixpences were cupro-nickel, weighing approximately 2.83g and measuring around 19.3mm.

The later Queen Elizabeth II sixpences feature the attractive floral reverse design, with national floral emblems including the rose, thistle, shamrock and leek. These post-1947 sixpences are cupro-nickel rather than silver, so they are best valued as collectable vintage coins rather than for precious metal content.

Also included is a French ½ Franc coin, visible in the photographs. The French ½ Franc of this period was a nickel coin, with the classic “Sower” figure on the obverse and the denomination with olive/laurel detail on the reverse.

Condition
