Vintage R. Journet & Co. “The Radio Puzzle” Dexterity Game – Circa 1930s

A wonderfully nostalgic vintage R. Journet & Co. dexterity puzzle, titled “The Radio Puzzle”, made in London, England and dating from around the 1930s.

Part of the famous R.J. Series of Popular Puzzles, this charming handheld game features a wonderfully period illustration of an early valve radio. The challenge is summed up by the instructions printed above the radio:

“Get the Valves or Tubes in their Holders.”

The puzzle contains all four original metal balls, representing the radio valves or tubes. By carefully tilting and manipulating the puzzle, the object is to manoeuvre each ball into one of the four circular holders on the radio.

Made in the traditional Journet style, the puzzle has a shallow red paper-covered case with a glass front, printed playing surface and original printed label to the reverse. The back carries the wonderfully playful advertising for “The R.J. Series of Popular Puzzles”, together with the maker’s wording “Made by R. Journet & Co., London, England.”

R. Journet & Co. became known for producing a huge variety of compact dexterity and patience puzzles during the early to mid-20th century. Designed as inexpensive portable entertainment, their ingenious little games have become increasingly collectible, particularly unusual subjects such as this early radio-themed example.

The imagery is a lovely snapshot of the early days of domestic wireless, when valve radios were becoming an important part of everyday family life. The use of both the British word “valves” and American “tubes” also gives this little puzzle an appealing period character.

Condition:

A genuine vintage example with plenty of age-related wear and character. There is rubbing, scuffing and some loss to the red paper covering, particularly around the edges and corners. The glass shows surface scratching, clouding and marks from age and use, while the printed design and reverse label show general ageing and wear. Importantly, all four metal balls are present. Please study the photographs carefully as they form an important part of the description.
