The RAFP has evolved significantly, from its initial reliance on Army personnel to a specialized, globally deployed force with its own Provost Branch and a dedicated Provost MarshalEarly Days (1918-1930s):

The RAF initially relied on the Army's military police for its policing needs. In 1919, the RAF took over policing of its own stations and units, and in 1931, the office of Provost Marshal (RAF) was officially recognized.

World War II (1939-1945):

The RAFP rapidly expanded to support operations during the war, including deployments in the UK, Iceland, and the Azores. They also played a key role in security matters, including counter-sabotage and counter-subversion.

Post-War Development:

The Provost Branch was formally constituted in 1947, and the RAFP received its own badge approved by the King in 1950.

The RAFP was tasked with safeguarding nuclear weapons deployed by the RAF.

Modern Era:

The RAFP continues to deploy globally, supporting RAF operations and UK defense missions. They are involved in various areas, including security operations, criminal investigations, and providing support to deployed forces. 1 Tactical Police & Security Squadron, for example, has been reorganized multiple times to better support air mobility operations and other contingencies.

The RAFP is known for its white-topped caps, which have earned its members the nickname "Snowdrops". They also wear distinctive red and black flashes on their uniforms.
