Vintage Treen Wooden Bowl – Large Hand-Turned Rustic Serving Dish

Vintage Treen Wooden Bowl – Large Hand-Turned Rustic Serving Dish – 30cm Diameter – Mid Century Country Kitchenware

.

Why we love it

There’s something quietly grounding about a piece like this.

.

Hand-turned from solid wood and shaped for daily use, this bowl carries the marks of a life lived in the kitchen—subtle knife traces, deepened tones, and that unmistakable patina that only time and handling can create. It’s not decorative in origin, but that’s exactly where its beauty lies.

.

Now, it sits perfectly in the modern home as both a functional piece and a sculptural object—equally at ease holding fruit, bread, or simply being admired on a shelf.

.

The story behind it

This is a classic example of treenware—a term used to describe small, functional wooden household items made before mass-produced materials became the norm.

.

Likely dating to the mid-20th century, this bowl would have been turned on a lathe by a skilled craftsman, designed for everyday kitchen use—perhaps for preparing food, serving bread, or use in dairy work.

.

Unlike purely decorative pieces, treen like this was made to be used, and that use is what gives it its character today.

.

The rich tonal variations and darker markings inside the bowl are a natural result of years of handling, oils, and contact—creating a surface that simply cannot be replicated.
