Antique Edwardian Gilt Brass Portrait Trinket Box – Belle Époque Jewellery Casket with Blue Velvet lined interior.

A wonderfully romantic antique gilt metal trinket box, full of Edwardian elegance and Belle Époque charm.

This beautiful oval jewellery casket has the kind of decorative presence that immediately draws the eye: a richly embossed gilt brass or gilt-metal body, a rope-twist border around the lid, a deep blue velvet-lined interior, and a portrait miniature-style image beneath a domed convex glass cover.

The portrait shows an 18th-century-style lady with powdered grey hair, soft features and a wide-brimmed hat decorated with flowers — a lovely nod to the romantic courtly fashion of the Georgian and French Rococo revival period. The portrait may be Marie Antoinette.

The box has a particularly attractive side profile, with pressed foliate decoration, shell-like motifs and scrolling detail running around the body. The gilt surface has mellowed beautifully with age, giving it a warm antique gold tone rather than a bright modern finish. There is visible age-related darkening, tarnish and areas of verdigris, especially around the lower metalwork and base, which add to its authentic period character.

Inside, the box opens to reveal its original-looking dark blue velvet lining. The velvet is worn, marked and softened with age, as expected from a piece of this period, but it gives the casket a wonderfully atmospheric boudoir feel. It would once have sat beautifully on a dressing table, holding small jewels, keepsakes, hat pins, rings or personal treasures.

The portrait lid is especially charming. Under magnification, the image shows delicate linear detailing to the hair and face area, suggesting a finely produced portrait miniature-style panel, possibly printed and hand-finished, set beneath convex glass. The exact method and material of the portrait panel have not been confirmed, so it is described carefully as portrait miniature-style rather than as a hand-painted miniature. More research may provide further information.

Surprisingly, despite looking extremely carefully, I have not been able to find an artists signature or makers mark, but someone with specialist knowledge may know more.

The overall effect, however, is highly decorative and very evocative of the late Victorian to Edwardian taste for romantic 18th-century revival pieces.

A beautiful antique display piece for lovers of Edwardian dressing table objects, French-style boudoir décor, gilt metal caskets, portrait miniatures, jewellery boxes and romantic antique interiors.

Condition

In good antique decorative condition, with age-related wear throughout.

The gilt metal has natural tarnishing, rubbing, darkening and areas of verdigris/green oxidation, particularly to the base and lower decorative sections. The interior velvet is worn, dusty and marked in places, with some compression and age-related discolouration. The base shows considerable patina and oxidation. The portrait panel remains highly decorative beneath the convex glass, with some light surface marks visible under close inspection.

The lid opens and closes, though as with many antique hinged boxes of this type, it should be handled gently. No maker’s mark has been found. Please study the photographs carefully, as they form part of the description.

This is an antique item with genuine age and surface wear, not a modern reproduction or newly restored piece. Its charm lies very much in its mellowed gilt finish, timeworn velvet and romantic period character.

Suggested Dating & Attribution

Based on its construction, materials, decoration and style, this piece is best described as:

Late Victorian / Edwardian period, circa 1890–1920, Continental or French-style gilt metal portrait trinket box.

The decorative language — portrait lid, gilt metal body, velvet lining and 18th-century-style lady — is strongly associated with Belle Époque and Edwardian dressing table pieces. It has a French boudoir feel, though no country of manufacture or maker has been confirmed.

Styling Notes

This would look beautiful displayed on a dressing table, antique writing desk, vanity tray or within a cabinet of curiosities. It would sit especially well alongside gilt mirrors, perfume bottles, lace, antique jewellery, French-inspired interiors, boudoir décor or romantic period pieces.

It is ideal for holding rings, small keepsakes, brooches, cufflinks or simply for display as a decorative antique casket.

Please note: this is an antique item with age-related wear, tarnish, patina, verdigris and interior velvet wear. The portrait panel is described as portrait miniature-style; the exact material and production method have not been confirmed. No maker’s mark has been found, and dating is based on style, construction and visible age.
