A wonderfully characterful antique wooden military box, believed to date from the late Victorian or early 20th-century period.

The front is decorated with a distinctive hand-painted belt-and-buckle style roundel reading “Griffin – Royal Engineers”, almost certainly identifying its former owner and military corps. Rather than displaying the usual Royal Engineers crest, this appears to have been individually painted for Griffin’s personal kit or storage box, giving it a particularly appealing sense of history.

Made from dark-stained wood, the box has a hinged rectangular lid, a keyhole to the front and a practical fitted interior. Inside is a removable narrow wooden tray, together with a larger open compartment that would originally have held personal effects, tools, papers or pieces of military equipment.

The underside of the lid retains extensive remnants of old paper labels or lining, adding to its wonderfully untouched appearance. No key is included.

The box is in genuinely aged condition, with surface scratches, knocks, small chips, areas of wear, old marks and losses around the upper edges. There are remnants of paper and adhesive beneath the lid, while the interior shows staining and general signs of long use. These imperfections form an important part of its authentic character and history. Please study the photographs carefully.

An unusual piece of British military-associated memorabilia that would appeal to collectors of the Royal Engineers, named military items and antique wooden boxes. It would also make a striking decorative storage box for a study, library or traditionally styled interior.
