A wonderfully characterful antique wooden travelling trunk dating from around the late Victorian to Edwardian period, circa 1890–1910.

Constructed from solid timber, the trunk is reinforced with numerous riveted iron plates to the corners and edges, with substantial metal carrying handles to the sides. The front retains two traditional drop catches together with the central keyhole, while the lid still carries the remains of an old paper luggage or ownership label. Although now too faded to read, it is a lovely reminder of the trunk’s original travelling life.

Inside, much of the original small-patterned paper lining remains. This has understandably become stained, worn and torn over the decades, but adds enormously to the untouched, authentic character of the piece.

The exterior has a beautifully aged dark finish with areas of wear revealing warm reddish-brown timber beneath. There are knocks, scratches, old fixing holes, surface wear, oxidation to the ironwork and evidence of historical use throughout — exactly the sort of patina we love to see on an antique trunk of this age.

Originally made as practical luggage or storage, today it would make a superb decorative storage chest, blanket box, bedside piece or characterful small coffee/occasional table. It would also make an excellent period prop or display piece.

Condition: Antique condition with substantial age-related wear throughout. There are scratches, knocks, losses to the surface finish, old holes and repairs, wear and oxidation to the metal fittings, and some irregularity to the timber. The interior lining is worn, stained and torn in places. The surviving paper label is faded and incomplete. No key is present and the lock is untested. Please study the photographs carefully as they form an important part of the description.

Why we love it: This is one of those pieces where the wear really is the appeal. The battered ironwork, faded label and rubbed timber give it a genuine sense of history, without having been over-restored or stripped of its character.
