Vintage Carr & Co Ltd “Jewel Box” Biscuit Tin – Carlisle, England

A wonderfully decorative vintage biscuit tin by Carr & Co. Ltd of Carlisle, featuring an elaborate jewel-inspired design in deep red, black, gold and muted green. The unique part is that the top lid is slightly cushioned and padded, adding an extra element to it's appeal.

Research has allowed us to identify this particular design as Carr’s “Jewel Box”, originally produced to contain the company’s Famous Assorted English Biscuits. Surviving examples retaining their original label describe the contents as 14oz (396g) and carry exactly the same embossed “CARR & CO. LTD – BISCUIT MANUFACTURERS – CARLISLE ENGLAND” marking found inside this example.

The hinged, chamfered rectangular tin is particularly attractive, with alternating scrolling foliate panels surrounding a large central medallion designed to resemble a piece of jewellery. Small coloured roundels form a ring around the central red oval, giving the tin its rather grand “jewel box” appearance.

This example has clearly been used and enjoyed. The original colours have mellowed considerably with age and there is surface rubbing, scratches, oxidisation, spotting and general wear both inside and out. The original product label is no longer present. We rather like the resulting dark, timeworn finish – it gives the piece considerably more character than a pristine example. The hinged lid remains present and functional.

Maker History

Carr’s was founded in Carlisle in 1831 by Jonathan Dodgson Carr, initially combining flour milling, bread making and biscuit manufacture. The company became one of the great names of British biscuit making and received a Royal Warrant from Queen Victoria in the early years of the business. Carr was also an innovator in mechanised biscuit production, and the ability to pack biscuits into decorative tins helped the company distribute its increasingly popular products much further afield.

By the late 19th century Carr’s was producing an extraordinary variety of biscuits, and the business became Carr & Co. Ltd in 1894. Carr’s remained synonymous with Carlisle throughout the 20th century and was eventually acquired by United Biscuits in 1972. The historic Carlisle factory continued biscuit production and remains closely associated with the Carr’s name.

Why we love it:

The faded jewel colours are lovely, but it is the wear that really makes this one. What began life as colourful commercial packaging has developed into a genuinely characterful little piece of British social history.

Condition: Vintage used condition with substantial age-related surface wear, fading, scratching, spotting and tarnishing. Original paper/product label absent. Please study the photographs carefully as they form an important part of the description.
