Vintage Nigerian leather bound keepsake or jewellery box with a lovely note

Vintage Nigerian Leather-Covered Wooden Stationery & Keepsake Box – Hinged Lid and Drop-Down Front

9 cm square

10 cm tall

A charming and rather unusual vintage leather-covered wooden box, complete with its original handwritten gift note – a lovely little piece of personal and social history.

Covered in beautifully aged brown, textured leather over a wooden framework, this box has a wonderfully understated design. Its clever construction features a hinged top lid and a separate drop-down front panel, secured by a small metal catch.

Inside, the natural wooden compartment offers useful storage, while the drop-down front reveals a small stitched leather pocket, ideal for holding notes, cards or other little keepsakes.

A particularly special detail is the original handwritten note, which accompanies the box and describes the covering as Nigerian leather. The sender expresses the hope that the recipient will enjoy the gift and that the leather "should last".

Although its precise original purpose is uncertain, we believe it may have been intended as a small stationery or personal storage box.

Today, it would make a delightful addition to a vintage writing desk, study or dressing table, perfect for storing letters, photographs, jewellery and treasured little possessions.

Why We Love It

It's the personal touches that make vintage pieces so appealing. The beautifully aged leather, clever opening arrangement and handwritten note all give this little box a story of its own. A thoughtful gift from one person to another, preserved for someone new to enjoy.

Condition

Good vintage condition with age-related scuffs, small marks, surface wear and some discolouration to the leather, particularly around the edges and corners. The interior wood shows natural grain and signs of age. The original metal fittings have developed an aged patina.

The handwritten note is included.

Please study the photographs, which form part of the description.
