Vintage Huntley & Palmers “Charm” Floral Biscuit Tin – Mid-20th Century

Price

£22.00

This is a lovely example of a Huntley & Palmers “Charm” biscuit tin, with its soft blue colouring and beautifully detailed floral decoration. Reading Museum records several Huntley & Palmers tins bearing the “Charm” name, dating from the late 1950s through the 1960s, so I would describe this example as mid-20th century rather than assign an exact year.

### Vintage Huntley & Palmers “Charm” Floral Biscuit Tin – Mid-20th Century

**Price: £22.00**

16 cm square

4 cm tall

A charming piece of British biscuit-making history, this vintage Huntley & Palmers biscuit tin features a delightful arrangement of colourful garden flowers against a soft powder-blue background.

The removable lid is decorated with a beautiful bouquet featuring a large pink rose, delicate lilies, purple blossoms and smaller colourful flowers, surrounded by rich green foliage. Complementary floral sprays decorate the sides, creating a wonderfully nostalgic piece of vintage kitchenalia.

The word **“CHARM”** appears on the front edge of the lid, identifying the decorative design.

Originally produced as packaging for Huntley & Palmers biscuits, these attractive tins were designed to be treasured and reused long after their original contents had been enjoyed.

Today, this lovely example would make a decorative addition to a vintage kitchen, dressing table or country cottage interior. Perfect for storing sewing accessories, letters, photographs or little keepsakes.

### Maker History – Huntley & Palmers

The story of Huntley & Palmers began in 1822, when Joseph Huntley opened a small biscuit bakery in Reading, Berkshire.

In 1841, George Palmer joined the business, helping transform the modest bakery into one of Britain's most successful biscuit manufacturers. By the beginning of the 20th century, Huntley & Palmers had become the world's largest biscuit manufacturer.

An important part of the company's success was its innovative use of decorative biscuit tins, many manufactured by Huntley, Boorne & Stevens, another business with roots in the Huntley family.

These beautifully illustrated containers were more than simple packaging. They became desirable household objects, frequently reused for generations.

This example belongs to the company's tradition of floral tin designs, which were particularly popular during the middle decades of the 20th century.

### Condition

Good decorative vintage condition, displaying age-related wear consistent with its history and previous use.

There are surface scratches, small marks, some wear around the edges and areas of oxidation and finish loss, particularly to the underside.

The colourful floral decoration remains attractive and displays beautifully.

Please examine the photographs carefully, as these form part of the description.

### Why We Love It

We particularly love the soft powder-blue colouring and romantic bouquet of flowers. There is something wonderfully nostalgic about these old biscuit tins, once ordinary household objects and now little pieces of British social history.

A delightful find for collectors of Huntley & Palmers memorabilia, vintage tins and traditional kitchenalia.

**Period:** Mid-20th century, probably 1950s–1960s

**Maker/Brand:** Huntley & Palmers

**Design:** Charm

**Material:** Printed tinplate

**Origin:** England

**Price:** £22.00

*Our descriptions are prepared to the best of our knowledge and research. As with all vintage items, signs of age and previous use should be expected.*

Historical research: Reading Museum's [Huntley & Palmers history](https://www.readingmuseum.org.uk/online-exhibitions/history-huntley-palmers) and [biscuit tin history](https://www.readingmuseum.org.uk/online-exhibitions/huntley-palmers-history/3-biscuit-tins/first-huntley-palmers-tins).

My pricing recommendation: £22 is a sensible asking price, with Comparable vintage floral biscuit tins generally sit in this lower collectible price bracket, although condition and design make a difference.
