A Little Piece of Cocktail Party History

A wonderfully nostalgic vintage biscuit tin from the famous British biscuit makers Huntley & Palmers, dating to approximately the late 1950s or early 1960s.

With its unusual triangular shape, bold red lettering and distinctive silver crosshatched design, this charming tin is a lovely reminder of an era when cocktail parties, entertaining at home and serving savoury nibbles were all the rage.

The lid features the words 'Cocktail Assorted Biscuits' surrounding a delightful illustration of a cocktail tray, complete with glasses, drinks and a tempting selection of savoury biscuits.

The sides repeat the Cocktail Assorted branding, while the underside bears the embossed Huntley & Palmers name and factory locations, including Reading, Huyton (Liverpool) and London, England.

A Little History

Huntley & Palmers began life in Reading, Berkshire, in 1822, growing from a small bakery into one of the world's most celebrated biscuit manufacturers.

Renowned not only for their biscuits but also for their beautifully designed tins, the company produced an extraordinary variety of decorative and promotional packaging, much of which is now highly collectable.

During the post-war years, cocktail parties became a fashionable way of entertaining at home. Savoury biscuits were the perfect accompaniment to drinks, and manufacturers such as Huntley & Palmers embraced this trend with specially marketed assortments.

The reference to the Huyton factory, which opened in 1955, helps place this particular tin in the second half of the 20th century.

Why We Love It

Combined with the wonderfully graphic lettering and period cocktail illustration, it captures the spirit of mid-century entertaining beautifully.

Vintage Condition

This tin is in fair vintage condition, showing considerable signs of age and previous use.

There is surface rubbing, scratching, discolouration, areas of paint loss and oxidation, particularly around the edges and underside. The interior shows more extensive oxidation and rust, including around the seams.

Despite this wear, the original decorative design remains attractive and the main lettering is clearly visible.
