A beautifully characterful vintage wooden artist's paint box, complete with an assortment of old oil paints and paintbrushes – a wonderfully evocative survivor of an artist's working life.

Believed to date from the early to mid-20th century, this substantial wooden artist's case has a rich, dark finish, traditional metal corner reinforcements, two fastening catches and a wonderfully worn leather carrying handle.

Opening the hinged lid reveals a fascinating collection of well-used painting materials, including numerous tubes of oil paint by established British artists' suppliers such as Reeves and Rowney, together with an assortment of paintbrushes in different shapes and sizes.

Perhaps the most appealing feature is the inside of the lid, which bears a colourful collection of old paint marks, splashes and dried pigments. These traces of creativity have accumulated through years of use, giving the box a wonderfully authentic appearance.

The case itself features traditional wooden construction with visible corner joints and aged metal fittings. Its practical, understated design reflects a time when artists' equipment was made to be carried, used and treasured.

A Little History

Among the contents are paints bearing the names Reeves and Rowney, two longstanding names in British artists' materials.

Reeves traces its origins to the 18th century, while Rowney was established in London in 1783. Both companies became well known for supplying paints and other materials to professional and amateur artists.

The assortment of tubes may have been collected over a number of years, adding to the box's appeal as a piece of artistic and social history.

There is something rather special about an old artist's paint box that has been left much as its owner last used it.

The worn brushes, squeezed paint tubes and colourful marks inside the lid tell their own little story. We particularly love its untouched character and the glimpse it offers into the working habits of a painter from years gone by.

Condition

In well-used vintage condition, with scratches, scuffs, marks, paint splashes and general wear throughout, consistent with age and use.

The leather handle shows considerable wear, while the metal fittings have developed an attractive aged patina.

The interior contains old paint residues and accumulated marks from previous use. Some paint tubes are heavily squeezed and show signs of deterioration.
