A wonderfully quirky vintage tin pail, hand decorated in a charming naïve folk-art style with a procession of ducks, geese and even a rather unexpected little mouse.

The simple utilitarian tin container has been brush-painted in glossy black before individual paper animal illustrations were carefully cut out and applied around the lower section using traditional decoupage techniques. The slightly irregular cutting, differing scales and informal arrangement give it a particularly appealing homemade character – very much the sort of piece created at a kitchen table rather than produced commercially.

The pail has a gently tapered cylindrical shape with a rolled upper rim, seamed construction and simple wire swing handle attached through metal side lugs. The interior remains unpainted, while the underside retains its original pale metal finish.

We believe this is an early to mid-20th century piece, probably circa 1930s–1950s, although its precise age and the original purpose of the underlying tin are unknown. It may well have begun life as an everyday household or food container before being imaginatively repurposed and decorated.

There is something particularly endearing about the decoration: ducks and geese wander around the circumference in various poses, accompanied by youngsters and the tiny mouse amongst them. It's wonderfully unsophisticated, individual and full of personality.

Perfect for collectors of vintage folk art, naïve decoration, country kitchenalia and unusual one-off curios. It would also make a fabulous display piece filled with dried flowers, brushes or other lightweight treasures.

Condition:

Good vintage condition with plenty of genuine age-related character. There is rubbing, scratching and wear to the black painted surface, some fading, discolouration and small areas of loss to the applied paper decoration, together with oxidation and surface wear to the wire handle and fittings. The interior also shows age-related wear and marks. Please study the photographs carefully as they form an important part of the description.

The wear has deliberately been left untouched, as we feel it forms an important part of the pail's wonderfully naïve handmade appearance.
