Set of 6 Vintage Stothert’s Ltd Castor Oil Bottles – Antique Chemist Apothecary Display

A wonderfully atmospheric group of six vintage glass castor oil bottles, originally supplied by Stothert’s Ltd of Atherton, Lancashire.

Four of the bottles retain portions of their original blue and cream paper labels, with surviving dosage instructions for children and adults together with the Stothert’s name. All six have their old cork closures, giving the group an appealing untouched chemist’s shop or dispensary appearance.

Believed to date from around the 1920s to 1930s, the bottles are made from clear moulded glass with elongated necks, flared rims and distinctive oval panels to the sides. They would make a striking addition to an apothecary collection, vintage bathroom display, curiosity cabinet, theatrical prop collection or period shop interior.

Stothert’s began as a chemist’s business during the 19th century and later produced a variety of medicines, tonics, mineral waters and soft drinks from Atherton. These surviving bottles are evocative reminders of a period when everyday remedies were bottled and labelled by regional chemists.

Condition

The bottles are offered in authentic, unrestored vintage condition.

Four retain partial original labels, while two no longer have labels. The paper labels are heavily worn, stained, torn and incomplete, with areas of loss. The glass has age-related clouding, surface marks, deposits and oily residue, while the original corks are stained, dry and deteriorated in places.

They have deliberately not been heavily cleaned, as doing so could damage the fragile labels and remove much of their original character. Please study all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the description.
