Vintage Art Deco Green Glass Storage Jar with Burgundy Screw Lid – c.1930s–1940s

The combination of green-tinted moulded glass, strong geometric decoration and the original burgundy screw lid gives it much more appeal than an ordinary pantry jar. Comparable square Art Deco-period glass storage jars are generally dated to the 1930s, with auction/dealer pricing varying considerably depending on size, lid and decoration. c.1930s–1940s because I can’t confidently attribute the base mark to a particular maker.

Vintage Art Deco Green Glass Storage Jar with Burgundy Screw Lid – c.1930s–1940s

A wonderfully characterful vintage kitchen storage jar dating from around the 1930s–1940s, made from thick, slightly green-tinted moulded glass and finished with its original burgundy-coloured screw lid.

The jar has a particularly attractive Art Deco-influenced design, with bold geometric moulded panels running around the sides. Both faces have been left comparatively plain, most likely to accommodate a paper label when the jar was originally in use. The square form with rounded shoulders and softly irregular green glass gives it bags of period charm.

The glass itself is lovely and substantial, with the small bubbles, ripples and irregularities associated with older moulded glass manufacture. There are indistinct moulded marks to the base, although we have not been able to confidently identify the maker.

The burgundy screw lid is a great survivor and really sets the jar off. It shows genuine surface wear and rubbing from years of use, adding rather than detracting from its vintage kitchen character.

Originally intended for storing dry goods, spices or other household ingredients, today it would make a fabulous decorative piece for a vintage kitchen, pantry or dresser. It would also work beautifully for displaying dried flowers, buttons, haberdashery, curios or simply left empty to show off the wonderfully tactile glass.

Condition:

Good vintage condition with age-related surface marks, scratching, cloudiness and manufacturing imperfections to the glass. The lid has rubbing, marks and wear to its burgundy finish. No major damage is apparent from our inspection. Please study the photographs carefully as they form an important part of the description.
