A wonderfully nostalgic piece of British kitchenalia, this original OXO Savoury Meat Stock jar dates to around the 1970s and retains its wonderfully timeworn paper label and bright red OXO screw lid.

Made from substantial dark amber glass with a square, rounded-corner form, the jar is labelled “OXO Savoury Meat Stock – for soups, stews, casseroles and gravies”. The side carries the Brooke Bond Oxo Ltd name and Leon House, Croydon address, helping to place it firmly in the later 20th-century OXO story.

The ageing of the original paper label is really what makes this one for us. Rather than looking artificially pristine, it has the faded, stained and slightly distressed appearance of something that genuinely spent years on a kitchen or pantry shelf. The large red OXO graphics remain striking, while the matching red metal lid finishes it off beautifully.

Ideal for a collection of vintage advertising, OXO memorabilia or retro kitchenalia, or simply as a characterful display jar in a vintage-style kitchen.

Maker History

OXO has been part of British food history for well over a century. The OXO trademark dates from 1899, with the famous stock cube following in 1910. The company behind OXO, the Liebig meat-extract business, merged with tea producer Brooke Bond in 1968, forming Brooke Bond Oxo.

The Brooke Bond Oxo Ltd, Leon House, High Street, Croydon address appearing on this jar is documented during the 1970s, including in 1976, which supports our suggested c.1970s dating.

Condition: Good vintage display condition. The amber glass has general signs of age and use. The original paper label is heavily aged with staining, fading, creasing and areas of surface loss, but importantly remains substantially intact and wonderfully decorative. The metal lid shows scratches and rubbing around the edges. Please study the photographs, which form an important part of the description.
