Vintage J. J. Clayton Amber Glass Bottle – Mosbro’ / Chesterfield – c. early 20th century
24 cm tall
6 cm round at base
Displayed with other bottles for sale separately
A wonderfully atmospheric early 20th-century embossed glass bottle for J. J. Clayton, with rich olive-amber colouring and raised lettering to the front. The bottle reads“J. J. Clayton”, with “Mosbro’” — an abbreviated form often used for Mosborough — and likely Chesterfield / Sheffield district wording around the lower section. It has a lovely darkened patina, surface wear and age-related clouding that give it real display presence.
This is the sort of bottle that immediately evokes local trade history: small mineral water, ginger beer, cordial and aerated-water businesses supplying their own branded returnable bottles to shops, pubs and households. Embossed glass bottles were practical as well as promotional — the name in the glass showed ownership, encouraged returns, and gave even everyday refreshments a smart local identity.
J. J. Clayton appears in collector references and sale records connected with Mosbro’ / Chesterfield bottles, including similar collectable mineral/Codd-style bottles attributed to the same name and locality. While detailed published history for the firm is limited, the bottle strongly fits the regional British soft-drink and mineral-water trade of the late Victorian to early 20th-century period.
This example has a pleasing aged look, with we believe its original dark screw-style closure still present. The glass has surface marks, internal staining/residue, small scratches, wear to the embossed areas and general signs of use, all in keeping with a genuine old trade bottle. It has not been cleaned aggressively, so it retains that honest “dug-up from history” character that collectors often enjoy.
A charming piece of local social history, ideal for bottle collectors, pub display, kitchenalia styling, rustic shelving, or anyone with an interest in Sheffield, Mosborough, Chesterfield or early soft-drink manufacturing.
Condition: Vintage/antique used condition with age-related wear, staining, residue, scratches and patina. Closure shows wear and darkening. Sold as a decorative collectable only.
