Crown Devon was a pottery brand established in 1878 as S. Fielding & Co. in Stoke-on-Trent by Simon Fielding. His son, Abraham, joined to help the business flourish, producing items like Majolica ware before the "Crown Devon" name was introduced around 1910 and officially renamed The Devon Pottery in 1912. The company became known for quality artistic designs at competitive prices, including its response to the Art Deco movement, but ultimately closed in 1982.
Key milestones
1878: Simon Fielding establishes the Railway Works in Stoke-on-Trent, trading as S. Fielding & Co..
1880s: The "Crown Devon" backstamp begins to appear on some wares.
1912: The Railway Works is officially renamed "The Devon Pottery".
1920s-1930s: Crown Devon embraces the Art Deco movement, introducing new ranges and finishes.
1960s: The company goes through a restructuring, with the Fielding family's last connection ending in 1967.
1982: The pottery closes its doors for the last time.
Production and style
Early years: The company's early success was built on exporting Majolica ware, particularly to the United States.
Art Deco: Crown Devon responded to the popular Art Deco style by creating new ranges and finishes, such as the recognizable "mattajade".
Artistic quality: The company aimed to produce goods of artistic design and excellent quality at competitive prices, which helped it gain popularity and compete with imported products.
Collectible items: Today, Crown Devon pieces are highly sought after by collectors, particularly those with Art Deco style, painted plaques, and specific ranges like the hand-painted game and farm animals.
Legacy
Despite the factory's closure, the Crown Devon name and its products continue to be highly collectible worldwide.
The Fielding's Crown Devon Collectors Club was formed to support collectors and share information about the company's history and varied products.
