Vintage 1960s Dutch Chinoiserie Floral & Bird Tin Canister – Made in Holland

A wonderfully decorative vintage tin canister, made in Holland and dating to around the 1960s, with an elaborate design inspired by traditional Chinese porcelain and Chinoiserie decoration.

The shaped square body is particularly attractive, with gently bowed sides and a raised, domed removable lid. Each side is decorated with colourful botanical scenes featuring flowering branches, birds, butterflies, peony-style blooms and rocky garden landscapes, all framed by a striking turquoise geometric ground and scrolling floral borders. The lid continues the design with a central floral panel surrounded by further flowers and foliage.

The underside is embossed “CONTAINER MADE IN HOLLAND” and the tin stands on four small raised feet.

Similar Dutch decorative tins are sometimes associated with manufacturers such as Daher, although this example does not carry a specific maker's name, so we have chosen not to attribute it to a particular manufacturer.

A lovely piece of mid-century decorative tinware and an unusual alternative to the more familiar biscuit and advertising tins of the period. It would look fabulous displayed amongst vintage kitchenalia, Chinoiserie-inspired interiors or simply used as a decorative storage tin.

Dimensions: Approx. 13.5cm long × 10.5cm wide at the widest point. Base approx. 8.5cm square.

Condition: Good vintage condition with genuine age-related wear. There is rubbing and some loss to the decoration around the raised edges and lid, surface marks, light internal wear and areas of oxidation/rust, particularly around the feet and seams. The lid shows some age-related wear and sits with a little movement, as photographed. These signs of age form part of the character of this charming vintage piece. Why we love it: The shape is the real star here. It has been designed to resemble an ornate Chinese porcelain covered jar, and the combination of birds, flowers, turquoise patterning and wonderfully curvaceous sides gives it far more presence than an ordinary vintage tin.
