Vintage Burr Walnut Queen Anne Style Cutlery Canteen Cabinet / Side Cabinet – Claw & Ball Feet

A handsome vintage burr walnut Queen Anne-style cutlery canteen cabinet, beautifully decorative and full of period-revival charm.

This attractive cabinet has a shaped front, richly figured burr walnut veneers and elegant cabriole legs terminating in carved claw-and-ball feet. The drawer fronts and top display warm golden figuring, framed by darker walnut-toned moulding, giving the piece a lovely sense of depth and contrast.

The upper section opens to reveal a green felt-lined fitted cutlery interior, with labelled compartments for table spoons, fish eaters, dessert spoons, dessert eaters and soup spoons. These details indicate that the piece was originally designed as a cutlery canteen or silver service cabinet, made to house a formal dining set.

The brass drop handles are in keeping with the Georgian revival style, with shaped backplates and a pleasing aged patina. The cabinet would work beautifully in a dining room, hallway, sitting room or boutique interior, either as a traditional cutlery cabinet, a small side cabinet, a drinks or display piece, or even as an unusual jewellery or keepsake cabinet.

Decorative, useful and full of vintage character, this is a lovely example of early to mid-20th-century revival furniture with strong styling appeal.

Maker and style history

There is a visible maker’s label, cameo furniture so I would attribute this to a specific manufacturer. It is best described as Queen Anne / Georgian revival style, a popular British furniture fashion during the early to mid-20th century.

This style looked back to 18th-century English furniture design, using features such as cabriole legs, claw-and-ball feet, shaped fronts, brass drop handles and richly figured walnut veneers. Burr walnut was especially prized for its decorative swirling grain and warm tone, making it popular for dining room and bedroom furniture.

The fitted green baize interior places the piece firmly in the tradition of the British cutlery canteen, where formal sets of cutlery or silver plate were stored in labelled compartments. These cabinets were often made as attractive pieces of furniture in their own right, intended to sit proudly in the dining room rather than be hidden away.

Condition note

In good vintage condition overall, with age-related wear in keeping with use. There are surface marks, light scratches, small areas of veneer colour variation and general patina to the wood and brass fittings. The green felt-lined interior shows signs of age and use but remains decorative and useful.

Cameo Furniture history: the strongest official match is Cameo Traditional Furniture Limited, a British company incorporated in 1973. Companies House records that it was previously called K. & T. Polishers Limited until the end of 1978, which is interesting because it hints at a background connected with furniture finishing or polishing before the Cameo name was adopted. The company’s registered office was in Rustington, West Sussex, and its last filed accounts were made up to 1992.

There are also documented examples of Cameo Furniture in collections and resale. The National Trust for Scotland lists a mahogany cabinet with a Cameo Furniture maker’s label, confirming Cameo as a recognised furniture manufacturer rather than merely a decorative term.
