A wonderfully characterful set of three vintage butcher’s shop signs, each shield-shaped plaque hand-painted with the words “Best Beef”, “Best Lamb” and “Best Pork.”

The signs have a fabulous old-fashioned commercial look, with bold red lettering, shadow detailing and a deep blue-green painted border. Each has a small hanging hole at the top and the backs are covered in a coarse brown woven material. They appear to have been individually made rather than commercially printed, giving them a particularly appealing piece-of-social-history feel.

Almost certainly once intended for display in a butcher’s shop, meat counter or market stall, today they make brilliant decorative pieces for a kitchen, restaurant, pub, farm shop or vintage-inspired interior. Displayed together, the three shields have real presence and that increasingly difficult-to-find authentic shop-fitting look.

Condition:

Good vintage condition with plenty of genuine age and character. There is fading, staining, rubbing, small marks and wear to the painted surfaces and edges, together with wear around the hanging holes. The Beef plaque in particular shows some darker staining towards the lower section. These signs have not been restored or repainted and their time-worn appearance is very much part of their charm.
