Vintage Cast Iron Cow & Calf Farmyard Doorstop – Dairy Farm Scene

This is a wonderfully characterful heavy cast-iron farmyard doorstop, and the cow-and-calf scene with the milk churn and bucket gives it much more charm than the simpler single-cow examples. The worn paint and surface rust suit it rather well. Comparable cow doorstops are currently being offered around the –£50 level, with condition and detail making quite a difference.

For ours, at £42.00. seems fair without a maker’s mark; I’d describe it as vintage, probably later 20th century.

Vintage Cast Iron Cow & Calf Farmyard Doorstop – Dairy Farm Scene

28 cm wide

18 cm tall

8 cm depth

A wonderfully characterful vintage cast iron doorstop depicting a traditional dairy farm scene, complete with a large black and white cow, calf, fence, milk churn and bucket.

The wonderfully detailed casting is full of little touches, from the bells around the cows’ necks to the textured grassy ground and old-fashioned milk churn. The whole piece has been hand painted in traditional farmyard colours, with the years leaving plenty of wonderfully authentic wear, rubbing and surface patination.

Made from substantial cast iron, it has a broad, gently curved base and enough weight to make it ideal for use as a decorative doorstop. Equally, it would look right at home simply displayed in a country kitchen, boot room, farmhouse interior or collection of vintage agricultural pieces.

The original painted finish has considerable age-related wear, including paint loss, rubbing, marks, oxidation and surface rust, particularly to the raised areas. We think this adds enormously to its timeworn character rather than detracting from it. Please study the photographs carefully as they form an important part of the description.

A great piece of vintage country-house charm and an increasingly popular style of decorative cast iron.

Why we love it:

It is the little details that make this one – the calf nuzzling into its mother, the old milk churn, bucket and farm gate. The beautifully worn paint gives it exactly the sort of lived-in character we love in vintage pieces.
