Vintage Enamel Drip Coffee Pot / Cafetière Filtre – Checked Plaid Design – c.1930s–40s

A wonderfully timeworn vintage enamel coffee maker with bags of character, probably continental European and most likely French, dating from around the 1930s–40s.

This is the traditional drip-filter or cafetière filtre style, comprising a tall pouring pot with curved spout and handle, together with the removable upper filtering chamber, perforated insert and fitted lid. When assembled, the filter section sits neatly on top of the pot to form the distinctive two-storey shape seen in the photographs.

Made from enamelled metal, it has a lovely warm cream ground decorated with a simple geometric checked pattern in deep burgundy and dark blue. It is an especially attractive piece of old kitchenalia and has the wonderfully utilitarian appearance associated with early 20th-century European enamelware.

The surviving perforated components are a real bonus, as these are often lost over the years.

Condition

This is very much an authentically aged piece. There is considerable enamel loss, chipping, surface rust, staining and general wear throughout, particularly around the rims, lid, handles, base and tip of the spout. The interior also shows staining and oxidation from previous use.

We have deliberately left it in its wonderfully weathered state rather than attempting to restore it. Please study all photographs carefully as they form an important part of the description.

Because of its age, surface wear and corrosion, we would recommend it as a decorative and collectable piece rather than for modern food or drink preparation.

A fabulous display piece for a farmhouse kitchen, café, vintage interior or kitchenalia collection – and one of those objects that looks even better precisely because it has clearly lived a life.

£45 is a good asking price for this one. The condition keeps it from the higher end of the enamelware market, but the complete filter arrangement, unusual checked decoration and strong decorative appeal make it considerably more interesting than an ordinary enamel coffee pot.
