A wonderfully atmospheric vintage wall-mounted display cabinet, with an architectural shape that gives it far more character than the usual rectangular vitrine.

The cabinet is constructed in wood with a dark, almost ebonised finish to the outer frame, contrasting beautifully with the warmer natural timber interior. The front is enclosed by sliding glass panels, while the angled sides are also glazed, allowing light into the cabinet and giving a good view of the contents from several directions.

Inside are simple wooden display shelves positioned to either side, making this ideal for displaying collections of curios, ceramics, glass, natural history pieces, automobilia, jewellery, small antiques or other treasured objects. The combination of dark framing, warm timber and old glass has a particularly good vintage shop-display feel.

The slightly canted ends give the cabinet a strong Art Deco / mid-century appearance, and we would tentatively date it to around the 1930s–1950s. There is no maker's mark visible, so we would describe it as a vintage commercial or collector's display cabinet rather than attributing it to a particular manufacturer.

The reverse retains substantial metal mounting plates, indicating that it was designed to be securely wall mounted. Its construction and layout suggest it may originally have been used in a shop, office, institution or private collection.

Condition

Good vintage condition with plenty of genuine age and character. There are scratches, small knocks, rubbing and areas of wear to the dark exterior finish, particularly around the edges, together with normal marks to the interior timber. The glass shows the expected light surface marks associated with age and use. These imperfections suit the piece beautifully and have deliberately not been disguised or over-restored.

A fabulous practical piece of vintage storage and an especially good choice for displaying an eclectic collection of smaller antiques and curios.
