Vintage Devon Violets Perfume Bottle – Hand Painted Black Glass – Torquay

A wonderfully evocative little vintage Devon Violets scent bottle, associated with Lownds Pateman Ltd of Torquay, Devon, makers of the popular Devon Violets fragrance.

Standing just 8cm tall, the opaque black glass bottle is decorated to the front with a charming hand-painted spray of purple violets and green foliage, together with its surviving DEVON VIOLETS label. It is finished with an attractive ribbed dark green screw cap, which has developed plenty of character and patina with age.

Even better, the bottle still retains a small quantity of vintage fragrance, and on opening the bottle there is still a wonderfully noticeable sweet violet scent. The contents are sold purely as part of the vintage collectible and are not intended for cosmetic use.

Lownds Pateman established its business in the Torquay area during the early 20th century, with Devon Violets becoming one of its best-known products. These small scent bottles were particularly suited to the flourishing Devon souvenir trade and today make lovely little pieces of British perfume, dressing-table and social history.

Condition

Good vintage condition with age-related wear.

There is some rubbing and loss to the hand-painted floral decoration, together with surface wear and patination to the cap. The front Devon Violets label remains present. A small quantity of vintage scent remains inside.
