Vintage French “Le Paquebot” Bonbon du Havre Confectionery Tin – Le Havre Patisserie Syndicate – c.1920s/1930s

A wonderfully atmospheric vintage French confectionery tin, titled “Le Paquebot” — The Ocean Liner — and produced for Bonbon du Havre, a sweet associated with the port city of Le Havre in Normandy.

Small in size but rich in story, this charming round tin captures a moment when ocean liners represented glamour, travel, trade and modernity. The lid features a bold illustration of a steamship cutting through the water, with the name Le Paquebot arched across the top and Bonbon du Havre printed to the side. Beneath the design is the wording “Propriété du Syndicat des Pâtissiers du Havre et de la Région”, indicating that the tin was connected with the local syndicate of pastry cooks and confectioners of Le Havre and the surrounding region.

Le Havre was one of France’s great maritime gateways, strongly associated with transatlantic travel and the age of the grand passenger liner. Against that background, a local sweet named after an ocean liner feels beautifully fitting — a little piece of regional pride, wrapped up in sugar, travel and seaside identity.

The underside is equally evocative, advertising different specialities for different seasons. For summer, the tin promotes fruitelets with natural flavouring; for winter, pralines made with almonds and hazelnuts; and for the house speciality, selected Mitcham mints. This reference to Mitcham peppermint gives the tin an extra confectionery-history detail, linking French sweet-making with one of the best-known peppermint varieties.

The design, typography and ship illustration suggest an interwar date, likely late 1920s to 1930s, though this is offered as an informed attribution rather than a firm factory date.

This is a heavily timeworn survivor, and its condition is very much part of its character. The lithographed decoration is rubbed and speckled, with surface oxidation, darkening, scratches, losses to the printed finish and internal rusting. It has the look of an object that has lived a long life — perhaps once sitting in a French kitchen, pantry, shop counter or seaside sweet shop.

A lovely decorative piece for collectors of vintage tins, French advertising, maritime memorabilia, confectionery history, Le Havre interest, or simply those who love small objects with a story.

Details:

The lid and base remain present and display well, but this is a timeworn collectible rather than a pristine tin. Please see photographs as part of the description.

Please note: This item is sold as a decorative vintage collectible only and is not suitable for food storage.

Why we love it:

This little tin feels like a tiny souvenir from the golden age of French ports, ocean liners and regional confectionery. It is not polished or perfect — far from it — but that is exactly where its charm lies. The worn surface, the steamship artwork, the Le Havre wording and the seasonal sweet descriptions all come together to tell a story of travel, trade, seaside nostalgia and the everyday pleasures of the French sweet shop.
