Huntley & Palmers began in 1822 as a small bakery in Reading founded by Joseph Huntley. The company expanded significantly after George Palmer became a partner in 1841, leading to the opening of a large factory in 1846 and making it the largest biscuit manufacturer in the world by 1900. Biscuit production in Reading ended in 1976.

Early history

1822: Joseph Huntley, a Quaker schoolmaster, established a small bakery in Reading.

1829: Huntley's son, Thomas, became a partner, and the business was renamed Joseph Huntley & Son.

1841: George Palmer, a distant cousin and fellow Quaker, joined the partnership, and the firm was renamed Huntley & Palmer.

Growth and expansion

1846: The company opened a large factory on Kings Road.

1857: The Huntley family's interest was bought out by George Palmer and his brothers. The company name was retained, and the Palmer family became the main partners.

By 1900: Huntley & Palmers was the largest biscuit manufacturer in the world, employing over 5,000 people.

Later years and legacy

1976: The company ended its biscuit production in Reading.

Legacy: The company's history contributed to Reading becoming known as "Biscuit Town".

Today: A significant collection of the company's archives is held at the University of Reading, and the history is explored in exhibitions at Reading Museum.
