Vintage pair of Geometric Crystal Glass Table Lamps – Chrome Detail – c.1970s/80s

A striking matching pair of vintage table lamps with wonderfully architectural clear crystal glass bases and polished chrome-tone fittings.

Each lamp is built around a substantial square footed base, rising through a beautifully faceted, waisted crystal column. The geometric form catches and refracts the surrounding light, creating flashes and reflections from different angles while retaining a wonderfully clean, almost minimalist appearance.

The design has a definite 1970s/1980s Hollywood Regency and Mid-Century Modern influence, when clear crystal, glass and Lucite were increasingly combined with chrome and brass to produce glamorous yet visually lightweight lighting. Comparable period lamps are often described today as Hollywood Regency, although the strong angular form of this pair also makes them work extremely well in contemporary interiors. Clear acrylic and crystal lighting became particularly fashionable during this period, and surviving examples range from relatively anonymous European production through to highly collectible designer pieces.

No original manufacturer's mark is visible on this pair, so we would prefer not to make an unsupported attribution. Interestingly, a very similar geometric crystal lamp has recently appeared on the vintage market retaining the remains of a label thought to read “Star Crystal” and possibly “Poland”, demonstrating that this type of lighting was also being produced by European crystal manufacturers. There is not enough evidence, however, to attribute this pair to that maker.

The present lamp holders carry CE markings, which indicate that the electrical fittings are later than the original 1970s/80s-style bases and suggest that the lamps have probably been rewired or updated during their lifetime.

They look particularly effective displayed together on a console, see pictures illustration only not included sideboard or as matching bedside lamps. We rather like them without traditional shades(sold with or without shades) and fitted with decorative filament-style bulbs, as photographed, (not included) which allows the sculptural glass bases to remain the focus.

Condition: Good vintage condition overall with light surface marks and scratches consistent with previous use. There appears to be a little wear minor nibbling to the underside/feet, as shown in the photographs. Hardly noticeable more importantly no marks to the main column Please study all photographs as these form an important part of the condition description.

Both lamps are shown illuminated and were working when photographed. Unless subsequently PAT tested, I would add: These are vintage electrical items and have not been PAT tested; we recommend inspection by a suitably qualified person before continued use.
