Antique Edwardian Cantilever Metal Jewellery Box 3 compartments

A wonderfully unusual antique cantilever jewellery box, dating to the early 20th century, probably circa 1900–1920. Possibly Indian.

Made from pressed and embossed metal with an aged silver-toned finish, the box has a clever articulated construction. When closed it forms a compact rectangular box, while opening it allows the two upper compartments to lift and move apart on hinged side arms, revealing the larger central compartment below.

The exterior is beautifully decorated with embossed floral scroll borders, beaded edging and ornate pierced floral medallions to the two lids. Even the articulated side arms have decorative rope-twist detailing, giving the box a particularly attractive and rather theatrical appearance.

Internally, the compartments retain a warm golden/brass-toned finish, contrasting beautifully with the darker, naturally aged exterior. With several separate storage areas, it would originally have been ideal for rings, brooches, chains and other small pieces of jewellery.

A fabulous decorative piece for a dressing table and an appealing addition to a collection of antique boxes, vanity accessories or unusual metalware.

Condition:

Good antique condition with expected age-related wear throughout. There is tarnishing, oxidation, rubbing and loss to the original surface finish, together with small marks and signs of use.( Could be cleaned personally I love the patina)The cantilever mechanism remains an important feature of the piece.
