Antique Edwardian Mother of Pearl & Abalone Hair Slide – Ornate Gilt Metal Barrette

A beautiful and unusual piece of antique hair jewellery, this elegant long rectangular hair slide combines shimmering natural shell inlay with wonderfully decorative gilt-coloured metalwork.

Believed to date from the late Victorian or Edwardian period, circa 1900–1920, the hair slide features an intricate geometric arrangement of pale mother-of-pearl and richly iridescent abalone-type shell. Its beautiful natural colours reveal flashes of pink, purple, turquoise and green as the light catches the surface.

The surrounding gilt-coloured metal frame is particularly attractive, with delicate scrolling foliage, floral details and graduated bead decoration. The combination of ornate metalwork and geometric shell inlay gives this piece a distinctive period charm.

The reverse reveals an interesting hinged fastening with a metal bar and small teeth designed to help grip the hair. An appealing example of historical hair jewellery, made in an era when decorative hair accessories were an important finishing touch to a fashionable outfit.

A Little History

During the late Victorian and Edwardian periods, elaborate hairstyles were often complemented by decorative combs, slides and barrettes. Natural materials such as mother-of-pearl and abalone shell were particularly prized for their iridescent qualities, bringing subtle colour and elegance to jewellery and personal accessories.

The flowing floral detailing of this piece also reflects the influence of Art Nouveau, a decorative movement popular around the turn of the 20th century.

Although the maker remains unidentified, the materials, style and construction suggest an early 20th-century origin.

Condition

Original Jeweller's Box

The hair slide is accompanied by a vintage jeweller's box bearing the name Leslie Smart & Sons, Watchmakers, Jewellers and Antique Dealers, 48 Gold Street, Kettering.

Whilst this is an interesting addition, we cannot confirm that the box originally belonged to the hair slide.
