A handsome antique mahogany dressing table or toilet mirror, probably dating from the late Victorian to Edwardian period, circa 1880–1910.

The rectangular mirror is held within a substantial moulded mahogany frame and suspended between two shaped upright supports. Large turned wooden side knobs allow the mirror to be tilted forwards or backwards to the desired angle – a practical feature that has made this style of dressing mirror popular since the Georgian and Victorian periods.

The whole stands on an attractive serpentine-fronted platform base, giving the piece a particularly pleasing silhouette. The rich reddish-brown mahogany has developed a lovely warm colour and mellow patina with age, and the simple, unfussy construction makes it equally at home in a traditional interior or alongside more contemporary furnishings.

These freestanding mirrors were originally designed for a bedroom dressing table or washstand and are sometimes referred to as toilet mirrors, dressing mirrors or swing mirrors. Today it would make a lovely bedroom, bathroom or dressing-room piece, while the broad base also provides a useful little surface for jewellery, perfume bottles or other dressing-table essentials.

Condition:

Good antique condition with plenty of genuine character. There are marks, small knocks, scratches, areas of rubbing and variations in the finish consistent with its age and use, particularly around the adjustment knobs, uprights and base. The timber has acquired an attractive aged patina rather than appearing newly refinished. The mirror glass remains very usable and the tilting mechanism appears complete. Please study the photographs carefully as they form an important part of the condition description.

A lovely useful piece of Victorian/Edwardian bedroom furniture, with enough age and wear to give it real charm without being overly ornate.

I particularly like this one at £95 — the broad serpentine base and chunky turned adjustment knobs give it much more presence than the fairly ordinary small Edwardian swing mirrors you often see.
