A wonderfully decorative vintage Art Deco period dressing-table mirror, dating approximately to the 1930s–1940s and now repurposed as an attractive wall mirror.

The shaped mirror plate has a distinctly period geometric outline and is mounted over a decorative gilt surround featuring moulded flowers, fruit, foliage and scrolling details. The contrast between the crisp-edged glass and the richer Rococo-inspired decoration gives the piece a lovely transitional Art Deco look.

This mirror was originally designed to stand on a dressing table with an easel support to the rear. The original easel is now missing, ( this could be easily replaced) and a later hanging arrangement has been added, allowing it to be displayed very successfully as a wall mirror. This alteration forms part of the mirror's history and is clearly shown in our photographs.

The mirror glass is held in place with small metal retaining clips and appears to have considerable age. The wooden-backed construction and remains of the former rear fittings further support its origins as a dressing or vanity mirror.

Condition

A genuinely aged vintage piece with plenty of character.

The mirror plate shows surface scratches, marks, spotting and deterioration to the silvering, particularly around the edges. There is also wear and rubbing to the gilt finish, with small losses and areas of discolouration.

The original rear easel support is missing and the mirror has subsequently been fitted for wall hanging. The back shows old fixing holes and general wear associated with its previous use.

We have deliberately left these signs of age visible rather than attempting to disguise them; they contribute greatly to the mirror's faded, authentic appearance.

Why We Love It

What makes this one especially appealing is its evolution. Once sitting on somebody's dressing table, it has now become a wonderfully atmospheric decorative wall mirror.

The worn silvering, warm aged gilt and unusual shaped glass give it exactly the sort of faded glamour that works beautifully in vintage, Art Deco, maximalist and eclectic interiors.

Complete period dressing-table mirrors can command considerably more, although specialist examples vary enormously according to quality, maker and condition.
