A beautifully decorative antique rosewood whatnot / four-tier étagère, with richly figured shelves, shaped serpentine edges and striking dark bobbin-turned supports. This is a wonderfully elegant display piece, designed for treasured ornaments, books, ceramics, glassware, photographs and curios.

The rosewood gives the piece a lovely depth of colour, with warm reddish-brown tones and attractive grain movement across the shelves. The contrast between the polished rosewood shelves and the darker turned uprights ( probably mahogany) creates a very characterful Victorian look.

The form is typical of 19th-century domestic display furniture, when open shelving and whatnots became fashionable in parlours and drawing rooms for arranging collections and decorative objects. The bobbin-turned supports add texture and rhythm, while the shaped edges and small finial details give the piece a refined, decorative quality.

There has been a sympathetic repair to top shelf corner see pictures hardly noticeable it is over 100 years old!
