Vintage 1950s William Crawford & Sons Biscuit Tin – Garden Scene Design

A wonderfully decorative vintage William Crawford & Sons Ltd biscuit tin, dating from the 1950s, with a particularly charming garden-themed design.

Made in Great Britain, the tin has a distinctive octagonal form with softly chamfered corners and a hinged lid. The lithographed decoration combines powder blue, cream and warm gold tones with delicate floral sprays and oval vignettes depicting formal gardens, fountains and architectural features. The raised oval panel to the lid gives the tin an especially attractive, almost picture-box appearance.

The base is clearly marked:

“By Appointment Biscuit Manufacturers to the Late King George VI”

The reference to the Late King George VI, who died in 1952, helps date the tin to the period immediately following his reign and makes this a lovely little piece of mid-century British social and advertising history.

William Crawford & Sons was one of Britain’s best-known biscuit manufacturers, with roots stretching back to 19th-century Scotland. The company developed major production centres in Edinburgh and Liverpool and became particularly well known for its decorative biscuit tins, many of which were designed to be kept and reused long after the biscuits had disappeared.

This example has a lovely timeworn, authentic appearance, with surface wear, rubbing, scratches, areas of oxidation and losses to the printed decoration, particularly around the lid and lower edges. These signs of age are clearly visible in the photographs and give the tin plenty of character. The hinged lid remains attached and the decorative garden scenes are still very attractive.

A super display piece for a vintage kitchen, pantry, dresser or shelving unit, and an appealing addition to a collection of vintage advertising tins, biscuit tins or British kitchenalia.
