Vintage Cadbury’s Milk Chocolate Wafers Black Rose Tin

A wonderfully nostalgic vintage Cadbury’s confectionery tin, originally produced to hold Cadbury’s Milk Chocolate Wafers.

The rectangular metal tin has a particularly striking design, with a glossy black ground decorated with vivid red roses, fine gold scrollwork and the words “Cadbury’s Milk Chocolate Wafers” in elegant gold lettering. The lid continues the rose design against a dark, almost theatrical backdrop, giving this a rather more sophisticated look than the usual brightly coloured confectionery tins.

The lid is hinged along the back and opens to reveal a plain metal interior. Now long separated from its original chocolate wafers, it makes a characterful piece of vintage kitchenalia and is ideal for storing letters, photographs, sewing notions, craft supplies or all those little bits and pieces that never quite have a home.

It would also make a lovely addition to a collection of vintage advertising tins, Cadbury memorabilia or British confectionery packaging.

Maker History

Cadbury’s story began in Birmingham in 1824 when John Cadbury opened a grocery shop in Bull Street, selling cocoa and drinking chocolate. Manufacturing followed in 1831, and under John’s sons George and Richard the business expanded considerably. The famous Bournville factory was developed from 1879, while Cadbury Dairy Milk was introduced in 1905 and went on to become one of the company’s best-known products.

Cadbury packaging and advertising has become collectable in its own right, documenting changing tastes in graphic design and the presentation of one of Britain’s most familiar confectionery brands.

Condition:

Good vintage condition with age-related surface marks, scratches, rubbing and general signs of use, particularly around the edges and base. There is some discolouration and wear to the unpainted underside, consistent with age and use. The decoration remains attractive and the hinged lid opens and closes as it should. Why we love it:

The black-and-red colour scheme is rather fabulous — much moodier and more stylish than the average biscuit tin. It is instantly recognisable as Cadbury memorabilia while still being decorative enough to use around the home.
