Vintage Art Deco Marbled Bakelite Shaving Stick Container

A handsome little piece of vintage gentleman’s grooming accessory history, dating from around the 1930s to 1940s.

Following our research, we believe this to be a travelling container originally made to hold a solid shaving-soap stick. Its compact cylindrical form, smooth enclosed interior and secure screw-fitting lid are all consistent with similar period shaving accessories.

The case is made from a richly marbled reddish-brown early plastic, designed to imitate the appearance of tortoiseshell. We believe the material to be Bakelite or a similar phenolic resin, although it has not been formally tested and is therefore described with appropriate caution.

Subtle vertical moulded lines decorate the body, while the raised geometric detailing around the lid provides grip and gives the piece a pleasing late Art Deco appearance. The compact size would have made it ideal for carrying in a gentleman’s wash bag or travelling case.

Today, it would make an appealing addition to a collection of vintage shaving equipment, early plastics, Art Deco accessories or social-history objects. It could also be repurposed as a quirky little container for small keepsakes.

Condition

Presented in good vintage condition with attractive colouring and marbling. There are surface scratches, rubbing and small marks consistent with age and previous use, including visible wear to the recessed top of the lid. The screw-fitting lid opens and closes correctly.
