Vintage Progress Gyroscope Top – British Made, Blackpool – Original Box & Info

This is a particularly nice example because we have the original red box, pull-string and illustrated instruction leaflet. The Science Museum dates the Progress toy gyroscope to 1950–1960 and records the maker as the Progress Gyroscope Company, a British toy manufacturer based in Blackpool.

Vintage Progress Gyroscope Top – British Made, Blackpool – Original Box & Instructions – c.1950s

A wonderfully nostalgic British scientific toy from the post-war era – the Progress Gyroscope Top, manufactured in Blackpool and dating to around the 1950s.

Made predominantly from metal, the gyroscope features a substantial circular flywheel decorated with colourful concentric blue and pink rings, mounted within its articulated outer frame. The original pull-string is also present, allowing the wheel to be spun at speed and used to demonstrate the fascinating principles of gyroscopic motion and balance.

What makes this example especially appealing is the survival of its original red cardboard box and illustrated instruction leaflet. The box retains its colourful period label reading:

“PROGRESS – BRITISH MADE – GYROSCOPE TOP – BLACKPOOL”

The original folded instruction sheet describes the Progress Gyroscope Top as a versatile scientific toy and illustrates numerous experiments and balancing tricks – including balancing the spinning gyroscope on objects, suspending it and demonstrating its ability to maintain orientation while rotating.

Maker History

The Progress Gyroscope Company was a British toy manufacturer based in Blackpool and is particularly associated with the 1950s and 1960s. Its gyroscopes were designed not simply as toys but as entertaining demonstrations of physics, allowing children to experiment with balance, rotational motion and gyroscopic stability.

The Progress Gyroscope was successful enough to become a recognised example of the classic British scientific toy, combining engineering, education and play in a wonderfully hands-on form.

Condition

Good vintage condition with age-related wear throughout.

The metal gyroscope has surface marks, rubbing, tarnishing and signs of previous use, all consistent with its age. The coloured decoration to the flywheel remains attractive and clearly visible.

The original cardboard box has rubbing, edge wear, small losses and general age-related deterioration but remains remarkably evocative and displays very well.

The original instruction leaflet has folds, creasing, discolouration and age-related marks but is substantially intact and remains clearly legible.

The original-style pull cord is present.

Please study all photographs carefully as they form an important part of the condition description.

A charming piece of 1950s British toy history, particularly attractive with its surviving box and original illustrated instructions. An excellent display piece for a collection of vintage toys, scientific instruments, educational ephemera or mid-century British design.

Why we love it: It is one of those deceptively simple vintage toys that manages to be both playful and genuinely clever. Best of all, the fabulous original packaging and instruction sheet survive – giving the piece much more character and historical interest than the gyroscope alone.

All antique and vintage items will show signs of age and use. Our photographs form part of the description and have not been digitally enhanced to conceal condition. Colours may vary slightly according to screen settings. Description and dating are given to the best of our knowledge and research.I’d use “Vintage 1950s Progress Gyroscope Top Blackpool – Boxed with Original Instructions” as the main eBay/Etsy title. The original instruction sheet is a real selling point here, so I’d definitely make your second photograph the one showing the gyroscope, box and unfolded illustrated leaflet together.
