Vintage Thorne’s Toffee Tin – Henry Thorne & Co Leeds – Rococo Court Scene – 1920s Decorative Confectionery Tin
.
There’s something wonderfully theatrical about this beautiful vintage Thorne’s tin — a glimpse into a world of powdered wigs, sweeping gowns, and grand entrances. Once filled with “The World’s Premier Toffee”, it would have been given as a special treat, a gift meant to delight long before the lid was even lifted.
.
The Story
Produced by Henry Thorne & Co. Ltd. of Leeds in the early 20th century, this elegant tin dates to around the 1920s, when British confectioners competed to create packaging as desirable as the sweets inside.
.
The lid features a richly detailed Rococo palace scene — aristocratic figures gathered at the foot of a grand staircase, their silk gowns and formal dress evoking 18th-century court life. During the interwar years, this romantic “Old World luxury” style suggested refinement, indulgence, and a touch of escapism.
The deep red sides with black scrollwork and gilt edging add to the sense of occasion, transforming what began as packaging into a keepsake box designed to be treasured and reused.
.
And reused it was — tins like this often found a second life holding letters, sewing supplies, photographs, or small personal treasures.

Great item, was a glass jar with contents, well packaged, with a fragile label attached, arrived no problems. A near perfect example of a 50s/60s Hopkin and Williams chemical bottle. The postage was fair, the item was as described and a good value, especially with contents.

I am absolutely delighted with this item. It arrived by post quicker than I expected. It was very well packaged up and I will add it to my ever growing collection..I spent quite a while deciding whether to add this [item] to it. it is exactly as you described.
