Product description

Vintage Royal Copenhagen Baca Fajance Vase – Nils Thorsson – Danish Mid-Century Design

A beautiful vintage Danish ceramic vase from Royal Copenhagen's highly collectable Baca series, designed by renowned ceramic artist Nils Thorsson.

Dating to approximately the late 1960s or early 1970s, this wonderfully decorative vase is a lovely example of Scandinavian mid-century modern design.

The bottle-shaped form features a gently flared neck, sloping shoulders and an oval body, decorated with an intricate arrangement of stylised birds, abstract shapes and geometric motifs.

Rich chocolate-brown textured glazing contrasts beautifully with a creamy white background, while vibrant turquoise blue and lime green details bring the design to life.

The beautifully detailed decoration has a distinctive tactile quality, characteristic of Thorsson's celebrated Baca collection.

**Maker History**

Royal Copenhagen was established in Denmark in 1775 and became internationally renowned for its fine ceramics and innovative designs.

Nils Thorsson (1898–1975) was one of the company's most influential designers. Having joined the Aluminia pottery factory as an apprentice in 1912, he went on to become its artistic director in 1928 and later held a leading design role at Royal Copenhagen.

During the 1960s, Thorsson developed the celebrated Baca collection, combining traditional ceramic techniques with bold, modernist designs inspired by nature, geometric forms and abstract imagery.

His work remains highly regarded by collectors of Danish ceramics and Scandinavian mid-century design.

**Maker's Marks**

The underside carries the Royal Copenhagen crown trademark, the three distinctive wavy lines, the word 'Fajance', Nils Thorsson's designer monogram and the hand-painted reference number 713/3208.

**Condition**

The vase presents well in the photographs, retaining its attractive colours and textured glazed finish. Some light signs of age and previous use may be present, particularly around the base.

Please examine the photographs carefully, as these form part of the description.

**Why We Love It**

We particularly love the combination of earthy brown tones with those wonderful flashes of turquoise and lime green. The intricate decoration makes this piece interesting from every angle.

Whether displayed as a standalone decorative object, used for a small floral arrangement or added to a collection of Scandinavian ceramics, this is a distinctive piece of Danish design history.

A lovely addition to a vintage interior, mid-century modern home or Royal Copenhagen collection.
