A wonderfully decorative pair of large vintage exterior lanterns, designed in the traditional Victorian street-lamp or coach-lantern style.

Each light has a substantial black pedestal base with moulded and scrolling detail, supporting a four-sided glazed lantern. The lantern tops are particularly attractive, with copper-toned metalwork that has developed a fantastic naturally aged surface, including mottling, oxidation and touches of verdigris. Rather than being overly restored, they retain exactly the sort of weathered character that makes reclaimed architectural lighting so appealing.

The square bases have fixing holes so the lamps can be securely mounted to a suitable surface. Inside each lantern is an electric bulb fitting. Given their age and unknown electrical history, we would recommend that the wiring and fittings are checked by a qualified electrician before installation or use.

These appear to be vintage decorative exterior lights made in the traditional Victorian/Edwardian street-lantern style rather than original 19th-century municipal gas lamps. We have not identified a maker from the visible fittings.

Condition is good vintage/reclaimed condition with plenty of genuine age and outdoor wear. There is surface marking, oxidation, patination and wear to the painted finish, particularly around the copper-coloured lantern tops and metal framework. The glass also shows signs of age and use. We think all of this adds considerably to their character. Please study the photographs as they form an important part of the description.

A cracking pair for either side of an entrance, gateway or driveway, or for adding a little period theatre to a courtyard or garden. They would also make impressive interior statement pieces in a pub, restaurant, shop or suitably quirky home.

Suggested price: £395 for the pair

I’d be comfortable listing these at £395, particularly once we have the measurements. For a quicker sale I’d pitch them around £325–£350. If they turn out to be especially tall and heavy, I’d actually be tempted to start at £425.
