Vintage Winnie-the-Pooh E. H. Shepard Illustrated Hinged Tin – c.1980s/1990s

Vintage Winnie-the-Pooh E. H. Shepard Illustrated Hinged Tin – c.1980s/1990s

A wonderfully nostalgic vintage Winnie-the-Pooh tin featuring the much-loved original-style illustrations associated with E. H. Shepard and A. A. Milne’s classic Pooh stories.

Finished in a soft pale blue-grey, the rectangular metal tin is decorated on all sides with different scenes of Pooh and his friends, including Christopher Robin, Piglet and Tigger. Rather than the later Disney animated interpretation of Winnie-the-Pooh, these charming illustrations are based upon Shepard’s distinctive drawings created for Milne’s original books.

The lid features Christopher Robin sitting beside Pooh accompanied by the words:

“so he went home with Pooh and watched him for quite a long time……”

The quotation comes from A. A. Milne’s The House at Pooh Corner, adding a particularly lovely literary connection to the piece.

Further scenes around the sides include Pooh sitting beside his case, Pooh surrounded by his honey pots, Christopher Robin enjoying a picnic with Pooh and Piglet, and Pooh seated at a table with Tigger.

Small copyright wording printed along the lower edge refers to the authorised Winnie-the-Pooh illustrations and their later colour treatment. These copyright dates relate to the artwork rather than necessarily to the manufacture of the tin itself. From its construction, graphics and licensing style, we believe the tin most likely dates from approximately the 1980s–1990s.

No identifiable manufacturer's mark is visible, so we have deliberately not attributed the tin to a particular tin maker.

Dimensions

Approx. 18 cm long × 13 cm wide × 7 cm high.

Condition

This is a genuinely used vintage piece and shows considerable age-related wear.

There are scratches, scuffs, surface marks and areas of discolouration throughout, together with paint loss and noticeable oxidation/rusting around sections of the lower seam, edges and corners. There are further marks and spotting to the interior, including a small red/pink stain beneath the lid.

The printed illustrations nevertheless remain attractive, colourful and clearly visible, and the wear gives the tin plenty of authentic vintage character.

Please study all photographs carefully as they form an important part of the condition description.

Due to its age and surface condition, we would recommend this piece for decorative use, collecting or storage rather than direct contact with food.

Why we love it

There is something especially appealing about Winnie-the-Pooh pieces which retain the gentle appearance of E. H. Shepard’s original book illustrations. The scenes around this tin feel much closer to the world of Christopher Robin and the Hundred Acre Wood than later character merchandise.

A charming piece of vintage nursery nostalgia, perfect for a Pooh collector, children’s literature enthusiast, vintage tin collection or simply as an attractive little storage box with plenty of history and character.
