A wonderfully timeworn vintage Huntley & Palmers biscuit tin dating to around the 1930s, with a decorative tea-caddy form, hinged lid and beautifully faded lithographed decoration.

Made for Huntley & Palmers of Reading & London, the tin is finished in a muted green ground with ornate borders, floral panels and charming eighteenth-century-style romantic figures. The imagery is very much in the Watteau tradition of elegant pastoral and courtship scenes, giving the tin a particularly decorative feel.

Huntley & Palmers was one of Britain’s best-known biscuit manufacturers and became especially celebrated for its decorative tins. Rather than simply being disposable packaging, many were deliberately produced as attractive reusable household objects, often in unusual shapes and with elaborate printed decoration.

This example has a lovely chamfered form with a raised oval panel to the lid and a hinged opening. The original painted and lithographed surfaces have softened beautifully with age, creating the sort of authentic, slightly battered appearance that works so well in a vintage kitchen, pantry display, shop interior or collection of advertising tins.

Condition:

Good vintage condition with substantial age-related wear. There is fading, surface rubbing, scratches, loss to areas of the printed decoration, tarnishing, oxidation and general wear to the metalwork. The interior also shows age and use. The hinged lid remains attached and functioning.

The wear is very much part of the character of this piece and gives it a wonderfully authentic old pantry appearance. Please study the photographs carefully as they form an important part of the condition description.
