Vintage 1954 Huntley & Palmers “Violets” Biscuit Tin – Reading & London

A charming original Huntley & Palmers biscuit tin dating to 1954, known as the “Violets” design.

This rather lovely little tin has an unusual softly scalloped form, finished in a deep chocolate-brown colour and decorated with sprays of purple violets, green foliage and a small golden basket. The same floral decoration continues around the sides, while the removable lid carries a further bouquet of violets.

Huntley & Palmers was founded in Reading in 1822 and went on to become one of Britain’s best-known biscuit manufacturers. The company became particularly celebrated for its imaginative decorative biscuit tins, many of which were deliberately designed to be kept and reused in the home long after the biscuits had been eaten.

This particular Violets pattern is recorded as dating from 1954, making it a lovely piece of post-war British packaging and social history. Its pretty floral decoration gives it plenty of decorative appeal too — ideal for a vintage kitchen, dressing table, small collection or simply for storing little treasures.

Approximately 10cm tall/long

Approximately 9cm across at the widest points of the scalloped edges

Condition:

Good authentic vintage condition with age-related wear throughout. There is rubbing and some loss to the finish around the edges of the lid, together with surface marks, scratches and general signs of handling. The interior and underside show age-related tarnishing, spotting and wear. The floral decoration remains colourful and attractive.
