Vintage Riley’s Toffee Embossed Advertising Tin – Halifax, England – c.1950s

A wonderfully decorative vintage confectionery tin produced for Riley Brothers (Halifax) Limited, makers of the well-known Riley’s Toffee.

Dating to around the mid-20th century, probably the 1950s, this small rectangular tin has a hinged lid with an unusually detailed embossed scene of mounted figures travelling through woodland. The romantic historical imagery has the look of a hunting or falconry scene, with riders in period costume, horses, trees and a bird in flight.

The raised silver-toned decoration is particularly effective against the rich red background, while scrolling and geometric embossed borders continue around the sides of the tin. It is a much more elaborate design than many ordinary confectionery tins and has a lovely aged, slightly theatrical appearance.

Riley Brothers was established in Halifax, Yorkshire, in the early 20th century and became particularly well known for its toffee. Decorative tins such as this were an important part of confectionery marketing, designed to be retained and reused long after the sweets themselves had disappeared.

Today it makes a charming piece of vintage advertising, equally suited to a tin collection, kitchenalia display, vintage shop interior or quirky decorative storage.

Condition:

Good vintage condition with genuine signs of age and use. There is rubbing, tarnishing, surface marking and wear to the silver-toned finish, particularly over the raised areas and around the edges. The red colouring remains attractive and the embossed detail is still strong and clearly defined. The hinged lid opens correctly and the interior shows age-related marks and wear.

We have deliberately left the tin with its naturally aged finish rather than attempting to polish away the patina.
