Antique early 20th century Bensdorp Amsterdam cacao hollandaise tin rare!!

Antique Bensdorp Cacao Hollandais Advertising Tin – Dutch Cocoa – c.1920s–1930s

A charming old Dutch cocoa tin produced for Bensdorp of Amsterdam, featuring delightful period advertising illustrations, decorative detailing and a beautifully timeworn finish.

Dating approximately to the 1920s–1930s, this rectangular metal tin originally contained Bensdorp's celebrated Dutch cocoa, advertised under the French wording **'Cacao Hollandais'.**

The front features a traditional Dutch girl wearing a white bonnet and holding a cup and saucer of cocoa, surrounded by an attractive muted turquoise-green background with an ornate brown patterned border.

The other panels feature fascinating period views of Breda in the Netherlands, including *Rue des Charrettes* and *Allée de Ginneken*, presented within oval picture frames.

One panel carries the French advertising slogan **'Saveur Exquise – Digestibilité Parfaite'**, translating to 'Exquisite Flavour – Perfect Digestibility'.

The tin retains its original-style hinged lid with matching decorative pattern.

A Little Maker History

Bensdorp was established in Amsterdam in 1840 by Gerardus Bernardus Bensdorp, a skilled chocolatier who had travelled extensively throughout Europe learning the art of chocolate and confectionery making.

What began as a small family business developed into a significant Dutch cocoa and chocolate manufacturer, with production expanding to Bussum during the late 19th century.

Bensdorp became known internationally for its quality cocoa products, with distinctive advertising and decorative packaging helping promote the brand to customers across Europe.

This particular tin is an interesting reminder of the days when everyday grocery products were sold in beautifully illustrated reusable metal containers, many of which have now become collectable pieces of commercial and social history.

Condition

In well-used antique condition, displaying extensive age-related wear, surface oxidation, scratches, fading and losses to the original printed decoration.

The surviving artwork and lettering remain particularly attractive, with the overall worn appearance giving the tin an authentic, rustic character.

The hinged lid is present. Please examine the photographs carefully as they form an important part of the description.

Why We Love It

We particularly love the combination of the charming Dutch girl illustration and the old street scenes of Breda. The beautifully aged turquoise colouring and decorative borders make this an appealing piece of vintage kitchenalia.

Perfect for displaying in a country kitchen, adding to a collection of early advertising tins or simply enjoying as a little piece of European social history.

An original vintage item, described to the best of our knowledge, with wear consistent with its age and previous use.
