A wonderful piece of Northamptonshire brewing history, this antique Phipps Brewers bottle is a charming survivor from one of the Midlands' most celebrated breweries.

Dating to approximately the early 20th century, this attractive bottle is made from thick olive-green glass, with a beautifully aged appearance and distinctive embossed lettering reading **“PHIPPS BREWERS NORTHAMPTON”** around the body.

Its elegant shape features a gently tapering shoulder, slender neck and substantial rounded base. Particularly appealing is the black screw stopper embossed with the Phipps name, adding further character and historical interest.

A Little Maker History

The story of Phipps Brewery began in 1801 when Pickering Phipps established his brewing business in Towcester, Northamptonshire. In 1817, the company expanded into Northampton, establishing premises in Bridge Street.

Over the following century, Phipps grew into one of the Midlands' most prominent brewing companies, becoming particularly well known for its traditional ales, stout and India Pale Ale.

The family business became an important part of Northampton's industrial and social heritage, supplying public houses throughout the surrounding counties.

In 1957, Phipps merged with its longstanding rival, the Northampton Brewery Company, forming Phipps NBC. The business was subsequently acquired by Watney Mann in 1960, bringing significant changes to the historic brewery.

Happily, the Phipps name was revived in the 21st century, with traditional brewing returning to Northampton.

This embossed bottle represents a tangible reminder of the original brewery's fascinating history.

Why We Love It

There's something rather special about antique brewery bottles. Originally everyday working objects, they have become wonderful reminders of Britain's brewing traditions and the businesses that once shaped local communities.

We particularly love this example for its rich olive-green glass, bold embossed lettering and surviving branded stopper.

An appealing addition to a collection of antique bottles, breweriana or Northamptonshire memorabilia, it would also make a lovely decorative accent in a traditional kitchen, home bar or vintage-inspired interior.

A genuine little piece of brewing history, full of character and charm.
